David Williams

David is a professional graphics programmer working for a game development company in the UK. He holds a PhD in medical visualisation which he obtained while studying at City University in London, UK. Prior to this he studied at the University of Warwick where he completed his BSc in Computer Systems Engineering and his MSc in Computer Science. He has eight years experience in C++ and 3D graphics, and is also experienced in numerous other languages and technologies.

David founded the Thermite 3D Engine and is currently the lead programmer. He has been fascinated with voxel technology since he discovered it while studying for his PhD. In September 2005 he started writing a general purpose volume visualization application but after a year decided to focus on the game-specific elements. He refactored the interesting code into the PolyVox library, combined it with the Ogre graphics engine, and in December 2006 the first demo of Thermite was released. He has continued to work on it ever since.
